Understanding sediment transportation is essential for both commercial entities, such as harbours, ports, and civil engineering firms, and public sector stakeholders, including governments, policy makers, and environmental agencies. Measuring velocity and waves in situ is a cornerstone of this understanding, providing precise data on the forces driving sediment dynamics. These insights are critical for ensuring the stability of infrastructure, preventing undesired erosion or deposition, and safeguarding coastal and riverine ecosystems. By leveraging this knowledge, both private and public sectors can develop predictive sediment transport models to support proactive planning, sustainable management, and the creation of resilient constructions in vulnerable areas.
Within Coastal Sediment Transportation study lead by TalTech, the Hydromasts are used on coastal data collection campaign on the coast of Latvia in the bay of Riga. In addition, several short validation experiments lasting from minutes to hours have been conducted on the coastline in Estonia. The location for the measurements is near Skulte in the eastern Gulf of Riga that is expected to reflect the typical wave conditions in this gulf under the most frequent south-western and relatively frequent north-northwestern winds.
