Digital Twins of the Ocean (DTOs) for Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)
DTOs for Marine Protected Areas demonstrates how a DTO for Marine Protected Areas can be set up – including an example related to MPAs in UK and in particula the Lundy island MPA in UK. This further demonstrates how technologies from the various technical work packages in the Iliad project can contribute to this according to the steps of a digital twin pipeline, which also will be shown through a new course "DTOs for MPAs" in the Iliad Academy.
The following is being provided:
• Marine Protected Areas: From ProtectedSeas through Hub Ocean ODP – calculation of network connected MPAs through ocean models with OpenDrift
• Shannon biodiversity: Derived from HUB Ocean ODP calculation of the Shannon index using species observation from OBIS
• Sea temperature: From CMEMS - Copernicus Marine Services - Atlantic - European North West Shelf - Ocean Physics Analysis and Forecast
• Clorophyll: From CMEMS Atlantic - European North West Shelf - Ocean Biogeochemistry Analysis and Forecast
• Habitat suitability: From EMODnet Habitat suitability
• Satellite imagery: ESRI Statellite imagery from ArcGIS.
• Bathymetry: From EMODnet Bathymetry
• Essential Fish habitats: FromEMODnet Essential Fish Habitats - Full Composite Product
The Iliad Academy course will illustrate further steps of observations and sensors with data acquisition and collection contributes with access to data aggregation sources such as CMEMS and EMODnet and possibilities for in-situ observations. In-situ observations can be with sensors for physical and chemical variables as well as for different types of biodiversity observations with cameras, eDNA/genomics, passive/active acoustic tracking, citizen science etc. The step of data management storage/preparation contributes with support for data spaces, data lakes and semantic interoperability.
The step of analytics/AI/Machine learning and processing contributes with tools and techniques for models and services portability and interoperability. The step of interaction and visualisation contributes with relevant 2D/3D/4D visualisation technologies.
