Lemon, squeezed between ship and shore, engaging citizens as scientist in driving innovation in the Dutch Shell-fisheries Industry
Shellfish farmers find themselves caught "between ship and shore," now facing rising challenges from invasive species, fuel costs, legal regulations, and climate change. Could geo-information offer a solution? When thinking about oysters, farmers might not come to mind immediately, but there are striking similarities with traditional farming: oysters in the Netherlands are also planted, grown, and harvested. Shellfish farmers even deal with issues like weeds, pests, and diseases. Increasingly, their profits—or losses—by season are impacted by factors such as invasive species, higher environmental compliance costs, and mortality from heatwaves and storms. With growing restrictions aimed at protecting nitrogen-sensitive Natura 2000 areas and habitats designated as seal resting zones under the Nature Conservation Act, the push for a more sustainable shellfish industry has led to heightened expectations from R&D to deliver innovative technological solutions that help mitigate risks in the sector.
