58th European Marine Biology Symposium

Start: Tuesday 8th July 2025

The 58th European Marine Biology Symposium (EMBS) is a long-standing annual gathering of marine scientists from across Europe and beyond. Since 1966, EMBS has provided a friendly, international platform for sharing research, fostering collaboration, and advancing marine science. Expect inspiring talks, engaging discussions, and a shared commitment to healthy seas and oceans.

Iliad will be represented at the symposium by Arne-Jørgen Berre from Sintef Digital, who will be presenting:

MPA 2025 Digital Twins of the Ocean in support of Marine Spatial Planning and Marine Protected Areas

The objectives of Digital Twins of the Ocean and Biodiversity is to become digital representations of the ocean with links to biodiversity and socio-economic data and models, with data connections  that enable synchronisation between the physical and digital  states at an appropriate fidelity in time and space. A number of platform-based ecosystems are now emerging in Europe in particular related to the  “European Digital Twin of the Ocean” (EU DTO). This  work has been done within the context of the European Digital Twins of the Ocean projects, Iliad DTO with connections to EDITO for MetOcean,  DTO-BioFlow for biodiversity and SEADITO for socio-ecological data and . The architecture is a set of  multiple digital twins interactions, including biodiversity digital twins in interaction with ocean and socio-economic digital twins. Digital Twins of the Ocean will in the future become a useful service for marine spatial planning for marine protected areas.

Presentation: July 8th at 14:55
